Live BSFL are a staple for insect-eating reptiles, birds, and amphibians, including:

🦎 Reptiles – Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, skinks, monitors, turtles.

🐸 Amphibians – Frogs, newts, salamanders.

🐦 Birds – Chickens, quail, finches, parrots, songbirds.

🦔 Small Mammals – Hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and other insectivores.

(Not ideal for snakes or strict carnivores that require whole prey.)

Nope! BSFL naturally contain high levels of bioavailable calcium, meaning you don’t need to dust or gut-load them like you do with crickets or mealworms. They’re ready to feed straight from the container.

Store BSFL at 50-55°F (a wine cooler or cool basement works best). This slows their growth and keeps them fresh for weeks at a time. If left at room temperature, they will grow faster.

No single feeder should be the only feeder. A well-rounded diet includes variety. BSFL are a perfect part of a diverse feeder rotation because they offer high calcium and hydration, but they work best alongside mealworms, roaches, and crickets for a complete diet

No! Unlike crickets and mealworms, BSFL don’t jump, climb, or burrow. They stay in their dish, making feeding easy and mess-free.

BSFL require very specific conditions to pupate and breed, making large-scale breeding difficult without a controlled setup. Most keepers find it easier to order fresh, consistent BSFL rather than breed their own.

If they pupate, they turn into harmless, protein-packed flies that many reptiles and birds enjoy eating. Some keepers even let a few pupate on purpose to add variety to their animals’ diets.
